As many of you already know, Stephenie’s publicist has emailed many of the fansites to request that we shut down our boards on July 14th until August 2nd to help prevent spoilers. While I take spoiler problems very seriously, and the Twilight Nexus has always frowned upon them very much, I need to make everyone aware of our decision.
After consulting the moderators and giving the issue much thought, I have decided to try and keep the forums up and running during the day. Here are our many reasons:
1. This is one of the most important times for fans to be able to communicate. The excitement is only going to grow in the next month and we feel it would be unfair to cut off online communication with TwiNexians that have proved themselves in the past.
2. Two weeks is a long time. Considering that no incidents have occurred (yet), shutting down the boards seems like an extreme precaution.
3. Thus far, there have been no arcs floating around like with New Moon, or early shipments, like with Eclipse. For both of the previous books, however, the Twilight Nexus forums remained open. We had ZERO spoiler incidents, and I was so proud that I could say that my members were able to pull it off. Let’s make that happen again.
4. This is a big one in my decision. I am available to personally moderate the boards very closely during this time (being 8 months pregnant and already on maternity leave, I have lots of free time these days). If I knew I wouldn’t be so available, I might make a different decision.
5. The majority of the time, when people are spoiled, it’s because they went looking for spoilers. If spoilers for Breaking Dawn do get out, and you really want to find them, you can go Googling for them.
6. There are those nasty people out there who like to ruin other people’s fun by spreading spoilers. I feel like shutting the boards down because of these few people would be giving them power.
7. You’re more likely to get spoiled *after* Breaking Dawn comes out, when some people have finished the book and are discussing it online. Unfortunately there’s always a chance, so whats the point of shutting down the boards just for beforehand?
8. The Twilight Nexus moderators were all unanimous in their opinions that it’s not necessary and felt it would not be fair to our members.
9. This is what moderators are here for. Although there were no spoiler incidents on the TwiNex forums with New Moon or Eclipse, if it *does* occur with Breaking Dawn, we are confident in our ability to shoot them down immediately.
10. Some - or maybe even most - ”spoilers” aren’t even true. It’s only a spoiler if you chose to believe it. Besides, one little sentence you read saying “Edward gets the vampire chicken pox and dies.” (even if it’s true) can’t compare to reading a 700+ page novel by our favorite author. In my opinion, to *really* spoil a book, you’d have to know whats on each page, in each chapter.
11. If you are truly worried about seeing spoilers on the forums, then you have a choice to not get on the forums. I completely respect anyone’s decision to do so.
12. If you’re going to go ahead and risk it, and use the internet in the weeks proceeding the Breaking Dawn release - it’s my opinion that moderated forums are one of the safest places to hang out. My advice to you would be to avoid blogs, reviews, and any other un-moderated Twilight website where spoilers are often seen.
This is not to say we won’t be taking extra precautions. We will do everything we can to help prevent any spoilers from rearing their ugly heads on the TwiNex forums. Here is what we are going to do to help prevent spoilers:
- Shut down the forums at night, when moderators cannot closely watch new posts and the forums aren’t very active anyway. Unless I’m up at 2am, which is actually a possibility at times.
- Set homepage comment settings so that they need admin approval before being posted.
- Strict enforcement, once Breaking Dawn is released, on new posts being labeled as “Spoiler” and banners/avatars containing spoilers will be taken down.
- Carefully screen new members to the forums during this last month. Don’t be surprised if your membership request is rejected during this time, as spoiler-posters are most likely to be new members we’re not familiar with.
- If spoiler issues do arise, and they become quite serious and difficult to avoid, then we will shut down the forums. Let’s hope, like with New Moon and Eclipse, that this doesn’t happen.
Remember, you have a choice to get on the internet, and I strongly recommend that you avoid blogs, emails from strangers, un-moderated fansites, etc. The majority of “spoilers” are actually just teasers, and have little or no truth to them.
Thank you Twi-Nexers for helping to make this a great, friendly website.
